Abstract

This study explores the integration of Buuttherapy: Unveiling Peace and Happiness Within, a Filipino enculturated counseling framework, into the curriculum of a higher learning institution in Cebu, Philippines. In response to the growing psychological and emotional challenges faced by undergraduate students, the research employs an existential-phenomenological qualitative approach to examine the transformative effects of the framework. Over a period of three years, Buuttherapy principles were incorporated into blended course delivery, engaging 312 students from Cebu Technological University. Purposefully selected high-performing students participated in pre-tests, Likert scale-based tasks, and examinations, with 45 undergoing in-depth interviews. Findings revealed significant cognitive and emotional shifts among students, including enhanced clarity, deeper self-awareness, and personal growth. Reports of “aha” moments and the recognition of one's essential identity beyond the physical and mental self-reflected the framework’s impact in fostering happiness and liberation from negative mental constructs. Central to Buuttherapy is the indigenous concept of BUUT, infinite consciousness, often mistaken for KABUUT, the body-mind system comprising thoughts and emotions. These findings suggest that the integration of culturally rooted therapeutic models like Buuttherapy can enrich student well-being and holistic development. Future research is encouraged to explore the applicability of this framework across more diverse student populations and academic contexts, as well as its comparative impact alongside other culturally responsive mental health interventions.
