Abstract

This research is a study of the evolving regulatory landscape and environmental perception of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS) on the legal and sustainability readiness in Myanmar maritime industry. If the shipping industry can integrate green energy and MASS technology, it will open a new era that dramatically increases safety, security and environmental sustainability. Employing a quantitative approach and analyzing primary data collected from 51 Myanmar seafarer officers, the findings reveal approximately 40% of the surveyed professionals believe that the current Myanmar legal framework is inadequate for handling the complexities of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). A significant majority of the surveyed professionals, which is around 70%, believe that MASS will positively impact environmental sustainability. This article aims to contribute to the development of a systematic framework to support Myanmar as a coastal State in preparing for the anticipated emergence of MASS operations in coastal waters.
