Abstract

The development of clinical psychology education in Albania represents an important step toward strengthening professional training, mental health services, and international academic cooperation. This paper examines the rationale, structure, and expected contribution of the new Clinical Psychology program to be offered at “Aleksandër Moisiu” University of Durrës in cooperation with Sapienza University of Rome through a double degree framework. The program is designed to respond to the growing need for qualified professionals capable of addressing psychological distress, developmental difficulties, family and social challenges, and broader mental health needs within the Albanian context. The study adopts an exploratory mixed-methods case-study design. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to 100 bachelor students of psychology at UAMD, including 50 second-year and 50 third-year students. In addition, qualitative data were gathered through four focus-group discussions and six semi-structured interviews with participants connected to the academic and professional context of the program. The study explores students’ interest in clinical psychology, their expectations regarding practical and professional training, their perceptions of a double degree with Sapienza University, and the relevance of the program for future mental health services in Albania.Special attention is given to the preparation of students through a curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge, research competencies, clinical assessment, intervention models, ethical principles, and supervised practical training. The collaboration with Sapienza University provides an opportunity to align the program with European academic standards, promote student and staff mobility, and strengthen the international profile of psychology education in Albania. The paper argues that the establishment of this program can support the professionalization of clinical psychology in Albania and create new academic and professional opportunities for students seeking advanced training.
