Abstract

The threat to development as a result of the glaring evils after the second world war in various societies, grew a strong desire for better society which could only be achieved through education. This paper tries to examine the philosophical basis of social studies, social studies education and development, obstacles to the teaching of social studies in Nigerian institutions of learning. Based on the discussions, it was suggested that there should be an in house cleansing by agreeing on one definition then conclusion.
